Fact Check: 2017 Viral Video Erroneously Linked to Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra

Date:

A viral video showing a man offering money to few women holding placards and Congress flags is doing the rounds on social media. Users have shared the video claiming that these women are paid to attend the Indian National Congress’ Bharat Jodo Yatra, and this is how Rahul Gandhi is making people attend his yatra.

A Facebook user posted the viral video with a caption: ഭാരത്‌ ജൂടോ : രാഹുലിന്റെ പരിപാടിക്ക് എത്തുന്നവർക്ക് കൂലി എന്ത് കൃത്യമായിട്ടാണ് കൊടുക്കുന്നത്. കോൺഗ്രസ്സ് (English translation: Bharat Judo: How exactly are the wages paid to those who attend Rahul’s programme. Congress )

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral video, and found it to be false.

Conducting a Google Keyword Search with relevant keywords, we found a YouTube video titled: LIFTF 2017 Congress bribing voters in Imphal, Manipur? VIDEO GOES VIRAL !, published on March 5, 2017, on an unverified channel.

The video matches with the viral clip. Closely looking at the video, we identified a woman holding a placard with Ward 5 (KMC) written on it. And KMC is an abbreviation of Kakching Municipal Council of Thoubal district in Manipur. So, the video is possibly from Manipur Assembly elections held in March 2017.

We also found a YouTube video on the official channel of Rahul Gandhi, dated October 23, 2017 and titled: Congress VP Rahul Gandhi speech in Gandhinagar, Gujarat. The audio from 2:25 matches with the viral clip proving that the audio has been superimposed on the video.

Although we could not identify the origin of the viral video, it is clear that the clip has been online since 2017, whereas the famous Bharat Jodo Yatra of the Indian National Congress started on September 7, 2022. So, it is impossible to link the viral clip to the rally.

Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral video, claiming Congress leaders paying money to people to participate in the Bharat Jodo Yatra, is false.
