Fact Check: Video Showing People Fighting Due to the Ongoing Wheat Crisis in Pak Is Misleading

Date:

Pakistan has reported wheat shortage in the country with prices of the daily commodity skyrocketing every day. A series of factors like the ongoing economic issues, shortage of foreign exchange, and destruction of wheat crops in recent floods, have led to this dire situation in the country.

Against this backdrop, a viral video showing people fighting with each other on the streets is doing the rounds on social media. Users have shared the clip claiming that people are fighting for subsidised flour amidst the ongoing crisis.

A Facebook user posted the viral video with a caption: श्रीलंका और चीन के बाद अब आटे के लिए लड़ते पाकिस्तान की हालत देख लीजिए और चैन मनाइए कि आप श्री Narendra Modi  जी के भारत में हैं !! #NarendraModi #YogiAdityanath

(English translation: After Sri Lanka and China, now look at the condition of Pakistan fighting for flour and rest in peace that you are in Shri Narendra Modi’s India!! #NarendraModi #YogiAdityanath)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral video, and found it to be misleading.

Running a Reverse Image Search of the video keyframes, we identified a tweet on an unverified account, dated September 6, 2022. The video in the tweet matches exactly with the viral clip and the Urdu caption translates to ‘Flood relief became a headache for the flood victims’.

A Facebook post published on an unverified page, dated September 7, 2022, matches with the viral clip. And the caption written in Sindhi translates to: ‘After all, who is responsible for these situations? What treasure is there in a piece of paper that is not taken out?’

The Sindhi and Urdu captions indicate that the video might be from Pakistan and the timeline of posting these videos differs from the ongoing crisis in the country.

Also, a tweet by UN Secretary General António Guterres informs about his meeting with the then PM of Pakistan, Shehbaz Sharif, to discuss the flood situation in Pakistan in September 2022. A user replied to his tweet with the viral video urging him to have a look at the situation in Sindh where Bilawal Bhutto was elected as foreign minister.

Although we could not find the exact source of the viral video, it is clear that it has been online since September 2022, and thus cannot be related to the ongoing wheat crisis in Pakistan.

So, we can conclusively say that the viral video claiming that people are fighting with each other due to the ongoing wheat crisis in Pakistan is misleading.
