Fact Check: Video of Himalayan Griffon Vulture Rescued in Uttar Pradesh Viral with Misleading Claims

Date:

A video of a large vulture surrounded by people is being widely shared on social media claiming that Jatayu, a mythological bird from the Ramayana, was discovered alive for the first time during the Kaliyug in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh.

The video is shared on Facebook with a caption: “कलयुग में पहली बार जिंदा मिले रामायण के जटायु! उत्तर प्रदेश के कानपुर में दिए साक्षात दर्शन” (English translation: Jatayu of Ramayana found alive for the first time in Kalyug! Gave live darshan in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim and found it to be MISLEADING.

Performing a Reverse Image Search, we identified an ANI tweet carrying a similar video on January 9, 2022, with a caption: “UP: A rare vulture was captured in Eidgah cemetery of Kanpur’s Colonelganj yesterday.” The locals handed it over to the forest department. A local says: “The vulture had been here for a week. We tried to catch it but didn’t succeed. Finally, we captured it when it came down.”

Deputy Director of Kanpur Zoo said: “A Himalayan griffon vulture in Kanpur. When they brought it to us, its legs were tied causing injuries. He was also in shock. It is unwell right now but we have given it treatment. It will be quarantined for a few days”. A group of vets at the Allen Forest Zoo’s veterinary facility are now keeping an eye on this bird, which is considered to be “near-threatened,” according to Indian Express.

The Himalayan Griffon Vulture has, however, been found in India before. On the shores of Dal Lake in Kashmir earlier in 2016, a vulture of the same species (G. Himalayensis) was rescued.

Similar vultures were seen in Tamil Nadu, Singapore, and Maharashtra in 2018, 2020, and 2021, respectively. Furthermore, after being cared for by the vulture breeding facility at Pinjore in Haryana, for 10 years, a pair of these vultures was finally released into the wild in 2016.

Thus, it is confirmed that the video of the Himalayan Griffon Vulture rescued in Uttar Pradesh is shared with misleading claims.
