Fact Check: Did Rahul Gandhi Refuse to Wear Turban in Absence of Cameramen? Here’s the Truth

A viral video showing Rahul Gandhi talking to someone regarding wearing a turban is doing the rounds on social media. Gandhi can be seen interrogating the colour and significance of various turbans, while the other person tells him about the quality of turbans that the maker provides.

Many users claim that Gandhi refused to tie a turban since there were no cameramen around. A Facebook user has posted the viral video with the caption: Everything is choreographed in Bharat Jodo Yatra including who should be called in to tie the turban and its colour. What is offensive though is Rahul Gandhi refusing to wear the turban when there were no cameras…Exploiting religious sentiments for politics is in Congress’s DNA.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral video, and found it to be false.

Looking closely at the video, we found a logo with State News written on it. Scanning the official Facebook handle of State News Punjab, we found a post, dated January 10, 2023, containing a clearer video of the incident with better audio quality.

The video matches the viral clip exactly. On watching the video, we can hear a woman in the background asking Gandhi for a picture, to which he replies: “Abhi nahi madam, abhi nahi.” (Not now madam, not now!). This clarifies that Gandhi was refuting the woman’s request and now to the turban.

We found another Facebook post of the interview of the person who tied the turban to Gandhi. He is Manjit Singh Ferozepuria a turban artist from Amritsar.

We could not find a single trace of information where he informs that Gandhi refused to wear the turban.

A YouTube video on Ferozepuria’s official and verified channel, dated January 10, 2023, and titled: Today Manjeet Singh Ferozpuria tied a turban to Rahul Gandhi pagg video Dastar।ਮਨਜੀਤ ਸਿੰਘ ਫਿਰੋਜਪੁਰੀਆ, shows the artist meeting with Rahul Gandhi and then tying a turban on his head.

The video clip starting at 1:08 matches exactly with the viral clip and here too, we see Gandhi refusing a woman in the background for clicking a picture with him.

So, we can conclusively say that the viral video, claiming Rahul Gandhi refused to wear a turban in absence of cameramen, is false.
