The screenshot of a tweet is widely shared on social media showing a child studying in torn clothes in what appears to be a makeshift classroom. Sharing this image, people are claiming it to be from India.
The text embedded in the image reads: “प्रधानमंत्री जी आप कैसा भारत गढ़ रहे हैं जहाँ तन ढकने को कपड़े तक नहीं हैं बच्चों के पास। #आत्मनिर्भर_भारत” (English translation: Prime Minister, what kind of India are you building where the children do not even have clothes to cover their bodies)

FACT CHECK
NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be MISLEADING.
With a Reverse Image Search, we identified a Cambodia-based news outlet having the same viral image from a different angle. The contents of the article, dated April 3, 2015, describe: “The Royal Government of Cambodia has decided to provide scholarships to poor students in public general education schools from grade 1 to 12 to facilitate the study life and promote non-abandonment of students. Previously, the budget was only given to lower secondary school students.”
According to another blog that carried more similar images in 2015, this photo was shot in the Kratie province of Cambodia.
In 2016, many Facebook users had shared the same image with a caption: “A poor school in Sambou district, Kratie province. Please help share. Share whatever you can!”
Also in 2020, the same image had gone viral. And the Indonesian fact-checking website turnbackhoax.id had debunked it at that time.
Thus, it is confirmed that the viral image is not from India.
