Fact Check: Fake Tweet Attributed To Greta Thunberg Viral On Social media

Date:

Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg got into a Twitter brawl with former kickboxer and right-wing supporter Andrew Tate, when the latter called her out on Twitter about his luxury cars and their overall emissions. Greta spared no time in replying to the entrepreneur through sarcasm. Tate was later on arrested by the Romanian Police over alleged human trafficking and rape charges.

Against this backdrop, an image of a tweet through Greta’s handle is doing the rounds on social media. The tweet reads: Bald ass faggot and it has received 5 billion likes and over 99 million retweets. Users have shared the picture claiming the tweet was done by Greta.

A Facebook user posted the viral picture with a caption: “U go queen”

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral picture, and found it to be false.

Scanning Greta’s Twitter handle for tweets done on December 29, 2022, we found no results for the given date. She had tweeted on the days before and after December 29, 2022, but not on the given date.

Twitter’s advanced search, too, yielded no results for the given content indicating that the viral image is morphed.

Comparing the viral picture with other tweets done by Greta, we could notice many differences in elements of the tweets. All the tweets done by blue-tick verified accounts on Twitter carry the verification badge after the name of the account, something that is missing in the viral picture. The font of the engagement metrics on the tweet differs as well. All other tweets have the entire content written in normal style, whereas the numbers are bold in the viral picture.

Five billion likes on a single tweet would have made history on the platform. So, searching for such numbers, we found that the tweet with the maximum likes was about the passing of Chadwick Boseman and was posted by his family in 2020. The tweet got over 7 million likes. This proves that the viral image has been edited to make it go viral in Greta’s name.

Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral picture, claiming Greta Thunberg called Andrew Tate ‘a bald ass faggot’ on Twitter after his arrest, is false.
