Fact Check: Old Unrelated Image Falsely Shared As a Child Survivor of Ukraine-Russia War

Amid the ongoing Ukraine-Russia war, which started in February 2022, an image of a boy in ragged clothes with bruises on his face is widely shared on social media, alleging that the Ukrainian boy is a survivor of the Russian attack.

The image is shared on Facebook with a caption: “Lesia Vasylenko (Kyiv, Ukraine) on Twitter — The saddest part: there are no children in #Ukraine anymore. Only little humans with very grown-up eyes, old even. Somewhat tired of a life yet unlived. Pictured: Marc, 8 yo, just survived a #russia artillery attack 88 9 comments 2 shares Like Comment Share”

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be MISLEADING.

Doing a simple Reverse Image Search, we traced the website Amazon.in that carries the same viral image on a book cover. Christina McKenna’s breakthrough bestseller, “The Misremembered Man” (Hombre en el Olvido), was published in 2008. It’s a look at life in rural Ireland.

McKenna is an Irish novelist, according to her website. “The Misremembered Man” is the first book of the trilogy that established her as an author.

We also discovered the identical cover with the boy in a 2014 YouTube video with the caption, “MALPASO | 2014 a year full of books”.

Thus, we can conclusively say that the viral image does not show a child survivor of the Ukraine-Russia war.
