Kolkata: Singer Arijit Singh found himself in the center of a political tussle after a government body canceled his show in Kolkata, citing that the event will clash with G20 on the same day.

Arijit Singh was scheduled to perform at the Eco Park venue in Kolkata on February 18. However, BJP’s Amit Malviya claimed that the show was cancelled because the singer sang Bollywood song ‘Rang De Tu Mohe Gerua’ at the Kolkata International Film Festival in presence of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Amit Malviya took to Twitter and added that “Arijit Singh who sang “Rang de tu mohe gerua”, with Mamata Banerjee on the dais now finds his show at Eco Park cancelled by HIDCO, a WB Govt body.”

However, Trinamool Congress was quick to respond and slam the remark made by BJP. Mayor of the city Firhad Hakim said that “The event marking India’s G-20 Presidency will take place at the Convention hall, which is just opposite the Eco Park. Several foreign dignitaries are likely to attend that event.”

The Kolkata mayor said the police felt that the programme could create a law-and-order issue.

He added that “Huge crowds would have gathered for Arijit Singh’s show and it would have been difficult to handle such volumes of spectators. The police rightly felt that conducting such a big event just opposite the Convention Hall could result in a law-and-order problem,”
