Fact Check: Elon Musk Didn’t Say Imran Khan Has Largest Number of Fake Followers on Twitter

Date:

A screenshot of a tweet, allegedly posted by Twitter CEO Elon Musk, is widely shared on social media claiming that former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has the maximum number of fake followers on Twitter. The text in the viral screenshot reads: “I am confirming that Pakistan’s veteran cricketer Imran Khan has the largest number of fake followers on Twitter.”

The image is shared on Facebook with a caption: “یوتھیوں کے امیرالمومنین کی ٹوئٹر پر بھی دو نمبری بڑی تعداد میں فیک فالورز ہونے کا انکشاف” (English translation: It has been revealed that Amir ul Momineen of Youthias has a large number of fake followers on Twitter as well)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be FALSE.

We could not find any credible media report corroborating the viral claim. Had Elon Musk made any such statement, mainstream media would have definitely covered it.

The official Twitter handle of Elon Musk also does not have any such tweets. We did a Twitter advanced search with the keywords “Pakistan” or “Imran Khan”, but could not find the viral tweet.

An archived version of Musk’s deleted posts compiled on PolitiTweet similarly did not reveal the viral statement.

Thus, it is confirmed that the viral tweet about Imran Khan’s Twitter followers has not been posted by Elon Musk.
