Fact Check: 2020 Video of Scuffle Between Indian-Chinese Soldiers Viral As Recent

Date:

Chinese soldiers clashed with the Indian troops deployed in the Tawang sector of Arunachal Pradesh on December 9, 2022.

Against this backdrop, a viral video showing a group of soldiers clashing on a snowy terrain is doing the rounds on social media. Users have shared the video claiming it to be from Tawang.

A Facebook user posted the viral video with a caption: अब मेरा देश नहीं झुकेगा…हर घुसपैठिया ठुकेगा… भारत माता के शेर Indian Army के जवानों ने #ArunachalPradesh के #Tawang में Chinese आर्मी के 300 घुसपैठियों को दौड़ा-दौड़ा कर भगाया… Salute to the Indian Army भारत माता की जय जय हिंद  (English translation: Now my country will not bow down… Every intruder will be defeated… Lions of Mother India Indian Army soldiers chased away 300 intruders of Chinese Army in #Tawang of #ArunachalPradesh… Salute to the Indian Army Bharat Mata Ki Jai Jai Hind)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral video, and found it to be misleading.

Running a Reverse Image Search of the keyframes of the video, we traced a YouTube video dated June 23, 2020 and titled: A Video Of Indian And Chinese Soldiers Fighting In Sikkim Surfaces Amid India China Military Talks on the official channel of Crux News a daily video news guide.

The description of the video informs that the visuals are from a fight that erupted between the Indian and Chinese soldiers in Sikkim. Although the exact date of the video is unknown to the page, the date of publishing proves that it has been on Internet for over two years now.

We also found another YouTube video, titled: Indian Army Soldiers & Chinese PLA Faceoff In Sikkim (Bunker Area Plateau) | Latest Video, published on June 22, 2020, on the verified channel of National Defence India’s leading DEFENCE NEWS & ANALYSIS (DNA) channel.

Here too, we can see that the keyframes match the viral video and the description informs that the Chinese PLA soldiers faced off against the Indian soldiers in the Bunker Area Plateau, Sikkim.

A news article published online on NDTV, dated June 22, 2020 and titled: Video Shows High-Altitude Clash Between Indian, Chinese Troops In Sikkim, corroborates the claims made by Crux and National Defence and further informs that the video surfaced around the same time as the Galwan clash between the soldiers of the two countries.

NDTV, too, could not identify the exact timeline of the video, but given that it is present on Internet since June 2020, it is certain that the video has nothing to do with the recent clash between the Indian and Chinese troops at Tawang.

Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral video, claiming to show visuals of the face-off between Indian and Chinese soldiers at Tawang, is misleading.
