Chhapra: At least 20 people died after allegedly consuming consuming spurious liquor (hooch) in Chhapra area of Bihar’s Saran district, said police on Wednesday.
Five people died on Tuesday night and 15 others passed away at a hospital on Wednesday.
The toll is expected to rise further. The family members of the deceased persons claimed that their relatives died due to the consumption of poisonous liquor.
Reportedly, 3 bodies have been sent for postmortem.
The hooch tragedy in dry state Bihar also led to a slanging match in the state assembly on Wednesday between opposition BJP and an angry Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. The sale and consumption of liquor was completely banned in Bihar by the Nitish Kumar government in April 2016.
Meanwhile, CM Kumar on Wednesday blamed the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for the loss of lives in the state due to consumption of liquor.
Nitish Kumar lost his temper in the House and screamed at the BJP MLAs ”Sharabi ho gaye ho tum…(you are drunk)”.
