Fact Check: Viral Video Is from COVID-19 outbreak, NOT related to Qatar FIFA World Cup 2022

Date:

After the defeat of Belgium against Morocco in the FIFA World Cup match in Qatar, a video showing some people arguing with each other on the road is widely shared on social media, claiming that this video is from Belgium, where people are attacking Arab Muslims after losing to Morocco.

The video is shared on Facebook with a caption: “فیفا ورلڈ کپ میں بیلجیم کی مراکش کے ھاتوں شکست کے بعد برسیلز میں شائیقین آپے سے باھر ھو کر عربوں پر حملہ آور ھو گئے” (English translation: After Belgium’s defeat to Morocco in FIFA World Cup, the fans in Brussels ran amok and attacked the Arabs)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-yingchecked the above claim, and found it to be MISLEADING.

Extracting keyframes from the viral video, we traced a news report carrying the same post on April 28, 2020, with a caption: “Coronavirus in Belgium: some spirits are heating up in Droixhe.” The article further reads: “In the district of Bressoux, in Liège, two fights broke out between two clans of drug traffickers. Thirty people were involved; the police intervened.”

The same video had been also uploaded on another website, dated April 27, 2020, with the text, “Fights and scuffles took place last Friday in Bressoux-Droixhe in the midst of confinement. Several videos have been shared on social networks.”

So, the viral video is from COVID-19 outbreak, and not related to Qatar FIFA World Cup 2022.
