Indore: A 24-year-old lady police officer named Shalini Chouhan went undercover to gather evidence and crack a case of ragging reported from the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial (MGM) Medical College.
During her investigation, Shalini would act as a regular ‘fresher’ in college moving around the campus, bunking classes like any other student.
The case was brought up to the authorities after a student from the college filed a complaint with the University Grants Commission (UGC) helpline.
Tehzeeb Qazi, Sanyogitaganj Police station in-charge while speaking with PTI added that “The complaint on the UGC helpline had complete details about the ragging incident, but it did not mention the names of the accused and the complainant student. The complaint also carried screenshots of chats on a social media platform, but the number of students involved had not been revealed,”.
Shalini while being undercover managed to connect the dots and identify 11 senior students allegedly involved in ragging activities of first-year students. Shalini would make sure to be dressed up as a student during her campus visits.
The seniors allegedly accused in the case would force juniors and ragg them by making them perform obscene acts.
Talking about the undercover operation, Shalini added that during her visits if someone would doubt her identity, she would cleverly change the topic and was never caught throughout the incident.
The officer further added that notices have been served to the accused under relevant provisions of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) and they have been asked to cooperate in the investigations and appear in court when the chargesheet is submitted.
After getting a list of the accused students, the college administration suspended them for three months with immediate effect last week, he added.
