18-year-old Jaylen Smith Becomes The Youngest Black Mayor In US

Washington: An 18-year-old college student named Jaylen Smith is elected to be one of the youngest black mayor of the United States. He will serve as the mayor of the east Arkansas city.

Jaylen Smith took to Facebook and announced his victory and claimed it to be a start to building a “better chapter” of Earle. He further thanked all his supporters through the post.

According to reports, the vote result was 235 to 185 in favour of Jaylen Smith. He is set to join the prestigious list of youngest mayors of the United States and will be the youngest member of the African American Mayors Association.

Earlier, Michael Sessions was elected as mayor of Hillsdale, Michigan, in 2005 at the age of 18. John Tyler Hammons was elected as mayor of Muskogee, Oklahoma, in 2008 when he was 19.

The report further added that the newly-elected mayor has vowed to work on the repair of the city’s drainage system, improvement of the police force. He plans on continuing his studies while being in office. He is currently studying at the Arkansas State University Mid-South in West Memphis, Arkansas.
