Fact Check: 2021 Video of BJP Workers Distributing Alcohol Misleadingly Linked to MCD Elections

Date:

The Delhi Municipal Corporation Elections are underway as all the leading parties of the national capital make efforts to claim victory in the civic body elections. The ruling party of Delhi, AAP, is going face-to-face with BJP, which is currently heading the MCD.

Against this backdrop, a viral video showing some men, wearing BJP caps and scarves, and distributing liquor to the people around them, is doing the rounds on social media. Users have shared the clip claiming it to be from Nawada ward 114 in Delhi, and the men to be BJP Delhi workers who are distributing alcohol during a rally ahead of the 2022 MCD elections.

A Facebook user posted the viral video with a caption: नवादा वार्ड 114 में भाजपा की शानदार रैली चल रही है। आराम से, धक्का मुक्की मत करो। सबको मिलेगा। बहुत शराब है भाजपा के पास! (English translation: BJP’s grand rally is going on in Nawada Ward 114. Take it easy, don’t push. Everyone will get it. BJP has a lot of liquor!)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral video, and found it to be misleading.

Running a Google Keyword Search about the incident in the viral video, we identified a year-old news report published in Dainik Bhaskar. The article titled: भाजपा पर कांग्रेस ने लगाया दारू बांटने का आरोप:यूपी कांग्रेस ने वीडियो शेयर कर कैप्शन दिया- ‘भाजपा की हालत खराब, भीड़ जुटाने को बंट रही शराब’, contains the same video as the one that is viral currently.

The article informs that Congress accused BJP of distributing alcohol in Haridwar to attract supporters to the BJP Chief, J P Nadda’s rally. The video was tweeted by many Congress leaders on their personal handles.

Conducting a Keyword search around the allegations, we traced an Instagram post from December 20, 2021, on the official account of Srinivas B V National president of the Indian Youth Congress. The video keyframes match the viral video.

Also, a tweet on the official handle of the INC Uttar Pradesh, dated December 20, 2021, carries a video that matches the viral clip.

Although we could not find out the exact location or origin of the video, it is certain that the clip has been on the net since December 2021. As MCD elections took place in December 2022, the viral video cannot be from the Nawada ward 114.

Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral video, claiming BJP workers distributing alcohol in the Nawada ward 114 during MCD elections, is misleading.
