Against the backdrop of anti-Brahmin slogans row on the School of International Studies-II building walls at Jawaharlal University, an image of a person wearing a saree is widely shared on social media, linking it to the incident. Following the School of International Studies and Grievances Committee’s investigation, the administration requested a report.
The image is shared on Facebook with a caption: “दिल्ली के जवाहरलाल नेहरू विश्वविद्यालय की यही वो कैटेगरी है जिसे ब्राह्मण और बनियों से दिक्कत है” (English translation: This is the category of Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru University which has problems with Brahmins and Baniyas)
Here’s the link to the above post.
NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be distorted.
Doing a Reverse Image Search, we found a news report, dated July 25, 2022, carrying similar images with a caption: “Indian blogger Pushpak Sen’s incredible pictures of walking the streets in Milan wearing a saree and a red bindi went viral”. Other media outlets had also covered his fashion statements.
Sen’s personal Instagram account, dated May 22, 2022, had also shared the image that went viral. The Lalit Great Eastern Hotel in Kolkata has been identified as the post’s location.
Pusphak Sen holds a master’s degree in fashion marketing and communication from Polimoda, an Italian fashion institute, according to his LinkedIn page. Sen works for a foreign firm as the manager of influencer marketing and celebrity style. Sen’s LinkedIn page does not indicate that he is connected to JNU.
Sen identifies as non-binary, as stated in an interview with The Telegraph. Sen’s photos of walking the streets of Milan in a saree and a red bindi went viral on Internet in 2021 after the Italian Senate rejected a bill to stop homophobic violence.
Thus, it is evident from the above information that the viral image is unrelated to JNU’s anti-Brahmin slogans row.
