Fact Check: 2018 Video Of Satellite View Falsely Linked To Recent Indonesia Earthquake

Date:

On November 21, a terrible earthquake struck Java largest island in Indonesia killing at least 272. Against the backdrop, many social media users have shared a satellite view, claiming to be of the earthquake as search and rescue efforts went on. In the scary footage, land appears to be moving almost fluidly.

The video is shared on Facebook with a caption: “Satellite video of the Indonesian earthquake. SCARY! The entire land mass is getting shifted!! Unbelievable!!”

Here’s the link to the above post

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be MISLEADING.

Extracting keyframes from the viral video and performing a Reverse Image Search, we traced a news report published by AP News, dated October 9, 2018 carrying the same viral video. The headline reads: “10 minutes of terror: A quake, a tsunami and a missing son.”

On December 28, 2018, this video had been posted on the website of The Weather Channel with a title: “12 GIFs That Show How Weather Left Its Mark in 2018.” According to the article, on September 28, an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.5 shook the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, causing a tsunami that claimed over 2,000 lives. The same was also reported by other news websites in 2018.

We also found one identical video on YouTube, which had been posted on the website of the Hindustan Times channel, dated October 2, 2018, with a title: “Watch: Satellite images of massive earthquake and tsunami that hit the Indonesian Island.”

The same photo GIF had been also tweeted by Maxar Technologies, dated October 2, 2018. We also found the same video published on the verified YouTube channel of KOMPASTV, dated October 6, 2018, with a caption: “After the earthquake that rocked Palu and Donggala, a phenomenon of soil liquefaction occurred in the Petobo housing complex, Central Sulawesi. In the video, one can clearly see how the residents’ settlements are  dragged away by the mud as a result of liquefaction.”

Thus, it is evident that a four-year-old video is falsely linked to the recent Indonesia earthquake.
