Fact Check: Japanese Fans Littered The Stadium After Match? Here’s The Truth

Date:

The Japanese fans, at the ongoing FIFA World Cup, have been hailed by people worldwide for staying back after matches and cleaning the stadiums leaving no litter behind.

Against the backdrop, a video claiming Japanese fans littering the stands is doing the rounds on social media. Users have claimed that the fans are happy while taking out litter from the bag and spreading across the stadium.

A Facebook user posted the viral video with a caption: Japan fans taking litter out of a bag and leaving it all over the stadium whilst laughing and smiling.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral video, and found it to be false.

Looking closely at the video, we noticed that all the actions around the stadium were happening in reverse, a man can be seen climbing stairs backwards, and many other people are also seen walking backwards. This indicates that the video might have been reversed.

Conducting a Google Keyword Search to find the truth behind the video, we identified a tweet published by the official handle of Alkass a Qatari sports channel, dated November 23, 2022.

The keyframes of the video in the tweet match exactly with the viral clip, but in the former, we can see the Japanese fans picking up trash around the stands, as opposed to the viral clip.

In contrast, another tweet published on the official handle of FIFA World Cup, dated November 24, 2022 has praised efforts of the Japanese fans. The video matches the initial keyframes of the viral video. Here too, we can see the fans picking up trash, not littering the stadium.

Also, a YouTube video titled: Japanese Fans Clean Stadium After FIFA World Cup Match, published on the official channel of India Today, dated November 25, 2022 informs that the Japanese fans stayed back after the match to clean up the stadium. The visuals in the video match the viral clip, proving that the latter has been reversed to spread misinformation.

Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral video, claiming Japanese fans littered the stands after a match, is false.
