Fact Check: Image of Mumbai Flyover Falsely Shared As Infrastructural Development in Gujarat

Date:

Many social media users are sharing a Gujarati-language campaign poster that depicts a multilane flyover, claiming that it is the infrastructure development in Gujarat.

The text on the poster is in Gujarati which translates to: BJP’s commitment to modern infrastructure:
3,000 km circular path will be built;
Corridors will be constructed from Dahod to Porbandar and from Palanpur to Valsad;
Saurashtra Express Highway Grid will be developed;
₹25,000 crore will be spent under the Gujarat Urban Development Mission;
Metro construction will start in Rajkot and Vadodara.

The image is shared on Facebook with a caption: “ઉત્તમથી સર્વોત્તમ આધુનિક ઈન્ફ્રાસ્ટ્રક્ચર માટે ભારતીય જનતા પાર્ટીનો સંકલ્પ… #અગ્રેસરગુજરાતનોસંકલ્પ #AgresarGujarat #Surat #BJP4Surat #BJP4Gujarat #Gujarat #NarendraModi #BJP” (English translation: Bharatiya Janata Party’s resolution for state-of-the-art modern infrastructure.)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be MISLEADING.

Doing a simple Reverse Image Search, we found the stock images website Shutterstock having the same viral image with a description: “Aerial panoramic view of Santacruz Chembur Link Road multi-layer four-lane elevated flyover concrete bridge at Tilak Nagar Mumbai, Maharashtra.”

The same image was also published in Alamy on November 2, 2014, with a caption: “Santacruz Chembur Link Road flyover, Mumbai, Maharashtra”.

Below is the comparison between the viral image and stock image.

We also searched Google Maps for this flyover, and found the structure in the picture as well as some indications of a railway station bridge from a different perspective. The newly built bridge barriers are not visible in the older photos, because the Alamy image and the Google Maps capture were taken seven years apart.

Thus, it is clear that an image of the Mumbai flyover is falsely shared as infrastructure development in Gujarat.
