Fact Check: Indian Footballers Were Not Forced To Play Barefoot During1948 London Olympics

Date:

A vintage picture of barefooted players is doing rounds on social media and it has been claimed that the picture is of Indian football players from the 1948 London Olympics and they were forced to pay barefoot as they were not provided with shoes due to lack of funds.

The caption with the picture in Bengali read: ” ছবিটি ১৯৪৮ সালের লন্ডন অলিম্পিকে ভারতীয় ফুটবল দলের ছবি, ভারতীয় দল ১-১ ড্র করে ফ্রান্সের সাথে, কেন জিততে পারেনি জানেন?

(English Translation: “The picture is of the Indian football team at the 1948 London Olympics, the Indian team draws 1-1 against France, do you know why they couldn’t win? Indian team played barefoot in the Olympics and four footballers got injured, our Sailen Manna was the captain of that team. The country was not in the financial condition to buy 14 pairs of boots, on the other hand, Prime Minister Nehru’s clothes used to be dry washed from Paris “Funny Nehru ………….. India lost by 1-2 goals even after playing barefoot in the match. If you are proud to be an Indian, know which is proudly donated to non-hindi speakers such as education, sports, literature, science, art etc. Yet Hindi speakers eat kheer”)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above post and found it to be misleading.
We started our investigation by putting the picture through a Reverse Image Search, which led us to an article on the official website of the Olympics dated February 03, 2022, about Indian footballer Talimeren Ao.
The article was about the legacy of Talimeren Ao, who captained India’s first-ever international football match against France which India lost 2-1.

The article mentioned why Indian players were barefoot and Talimeren Ao was famously quoted saying  “In India, we play football, whereas you play bootball!”.

Digging further, we found a tweet from FIFA dated July 31, 2018, which had the full image in which another Indian player can be seen wearing shoes.

With the above information, it can be concluded that the Indian footballers did not wear shoes during the football match out of choice.
