Fact Check: Old Clip of Imam Praying Amid Tremors Falsely Linked to Recent Indonesia Earthquake

On November 21, a powerful earthquake that struck Indonesia’s West Java province resulted in at least 160 fatalities, close to a thousand injuries, and millions of dollars worth of damage. The United States Geological Survey estimates that the earthquake, which struck Indonesia around 1:21 pm local time, had a magnitude of 5.6.

Against the backdrop, a video showing a man dressed in white praying inside a mosque amid heavy tremors is widely shared on social media, linking it to the recent earthquake in Indonesia. It claims that even amid heavy tremors, the man in white and a few others remained steady, holding the walls as they prayed.

The video is shared on Facebook with a caption: “#Earthquake of 5.6 magnitude hits Indonesia, 56 died and 700 injured so far. Worshipers continued to pray Namaz. SubhanAllah”

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be MISLEADING. 

With a Reverse Image Search, we found a BBC report, dated August 7, 2018, carrying the same viral video. The article reads: “A clip showing an Imam continuing to pray as the Bali mosque is rocked by the recent earthquake has gone viral, with many praising the man for his steadfastness.”

The verified YouTube handle of Outlook Magazine has also carried the same viral video, dated August 6, 2018. The description reads: “Video: Indonesian Imam Continues Leading Prayer As Earthquake Hits”. 

Guardian News also carried the same viral video on August 6, 2018, with the caption, “Footage of an Imam reciting evening prayers in Bali while a deadly earthquake struck the neighbouring island of Lombok has gone viral, with people praising him for his unwavering faith.” 

According to a New York Times article, dated August 6, 2018, at least 98 people died and 20,000 were left homeless as a result of this terrible earthquake.

Thus, it is confirmed that the viral video is not related to the recent earthquake in Indonesia.
