Doha: A day after one of the major upsets in the ongoing FIFA World Cup when Saudi Arabia defeated Argentina in the opener match, Japan hit back and defeated Germany by 2-1 in the Group E clash on Wednesday.
Germany’s Ilkay Guendogan managed to score and get the lead in the first half of the match. However, Japan showed major skill in the second half of the match as substitutes Ritsu Doan and Takuma Asano in the last 15 minutes gave Japan a stunning 2-1 lead in the game.
With this, they defeated the four-time World Champion in their opening match. This was the first time the two teams met in a competition.
Ahead of the match, Germany protested by covering their mouth with hands in wake of FIFA’s decision to stop plans to wear armbands to protest discrimination.
