Fact Check: Post About Crowd Chanting Profane Slogans for Biden During Obama’s Speech Is Misleading

Date:

A short 39-second video of a crowd shouting offensive slogans during ex-US President Barack Obama’s speech is doing the rounds on social media recently. The audience can be heard speaking ill about US President Joe Biden while Obama tries to control them.

A Facebook user posted the viral video with a caption: Barack Obama can’t control his crowd as they chant FJB. He is really upset and throwing a fit on stage. I can’t stop watching this. I heard he wanted to stop filming, so people wouldn’t share and tweet this clip. #SaveAmerica #VoteRed #FJB

You can check the video here.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral video, and found it to be misleading.

Running a Google Keyword Search about an interruption in Obama’s speech, we traced a YouTube video, titled: See Obama’s response when heckler interrupts his speech, published on the official verified channel of CNN, dated October 30, 2022. According to the description of the video, Obama was interrupted by a heckler when he was discussing political civility at a rally for the Governor of Michigan, Gretchen Whitmer.

Obama can be seen talking about the attack on Paul Pelosi when someone from the crowd interrupts him. Obama fumbles for a moment trying to answer him while the crowd starts chanting “Obama, Obama…” in his support. Keyframes starting at 1:33 match with the viral video, the remaining frames can also be seen in different parts of the YouTube video. Contrary to the viral clip, we could not hear any slogans raised for Joe Biden in the entire video, hinting that the slogans might be added later to the clip.

We also came across a tweet by a Washington Post Journalist, Dylan Wells, who attended the event live. The video in the tweet has been shot from a different angle as compared to the viral clip, but it covers the moment when the heckler interrupted Obama’s speech. Here too, we can see the crowd chanting Obama’s name, instead of profane slogans against Biden, when he tries to tackle him.

The incident was covered by many national and international news networks like Wion news, Independent, Business Insider, The Washington Post, etc., and none of them reported any slogans against Joe Biden, thereby confirming that the audio on the viral clip has been edited.

Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral video claiming the crowd chanting profane slogans for Joe Biden during Obama’s speech is misleading.
