Fact Check: Morphed Image Viral as Students Protesting Against Sunak Becoming UK PM

Date:

On October 25, 2022, Rishi Sunak became the United Kingdom’s first Prime Minister of colour and is also the first Hindu PM of Britain with Indian ancestry.

In the above context, an image of students of left ideology holding a placard demanding the resignation of Rishi Sunak has gone viral on social media.

The placard reads: “আরএসএসের দালাল ঋষি সুনকের পদত্যাগ চাই” (English translation: “We demand resignation of BJP’s agent Rishi Sunak.”)

The image is shared with a caption: “সমাজে কোন অবদান নেই কিন্তু প্রতিবাদ করার শত অকেজো কারণ খুঁজে বের করতে সক্ষম ভামপন্থীরা |” (English translation: “No contribution to society but leftists able to find hundreds of useless reasons to protest.”)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile did the fact-check, and found it to be fake.

Doing a Google Reverse Image Search, we found the original image uploaded on a website, Young India Foundation, on December 24, 2019. In the original image, the banner reads: “Resist fascist attack on education.”

We found the same image uploaded by Patrika on December 23, 2019. The article associated with the post talks about violence at Jadavpur University.

Hence, we can ascertain that an old image is morphed and shared with fake claim.
