Fact Check: Does the Viral Video Show Women Consuming Drug During AAP Regime in Punjab?

A video showing two women consuming drugs is being widely shared on social media. It claims that these two women are consuming drugs during Aam Aadmi Party’s regime in Punjab. The video is shared to insinuate that drug nuisance is rife in Punjab.

The video is shared with a caption: “केजरीवाल का पंजाब को तोहफा, आज पंजाब में नशा घर घर पहुंच चुका है, पंजाब की बहनें बेटियां अब नशे की गिरफ्त में आ गई हैं, ड्रग्स माफिया और आम आदमी पार्टी की सरकार मुफ्त बिजली पानी की क्या कीमत वसूल रही है सबके सामने है.” (English translation: “Kejriwal’s gift to Punjab. Intoxication has reached every house in Punjab lately, the sisters and daughters of Punjab have been gripped by drugs. Aam Aadmi Party government is providing free electricity and water at this cost”.)

NewsMobile did the fact-check, and found it to be misleading.

Running a Google Reverse Image Search with one of the screenshots, we found the same video uploaded by a Facebook page on June 28, 2015, with a caption: “VIRAL VIDEO SHOWS GIRLS IN PUNJAB BECOMING VICTIM OF DRUG EPIDEMIC. A video has gone viral on social networks showing 2 girls taking drugs in what appears to be a place of business. The girls were recorded doing drugs and the video was posted on social networks. The video recorded well over one million combines views from various Facebook pages. The video has highlighted the shocking state of affairs in Punjab where over 70% of the youth is on drugs.”

We found that Aam Aadmi Party came to power in Punjab after the State Assembly Election results were declared on March 10, 2022.

While we were not able to verify the origin of the video, we can ascertain that the video in question is old and is not associated with AAP’s ruling in Punjab.

Thus, the viral claim is misleading.
