Fact Check: Viral Image Claiming Fans Demeaning Bharat Jodo Yatra During a Cricket Match Is Fake

Date:

A viral picture of two supporters of the Indian cricket team showing a poster demeaning the Bharat Jodo Yatra of the Indian National Congress is doing the rounds on social media. The poster contains a picture of Rahul Gandhi and his grandfather Feroze Gandhi and the content translates to:

Couldn’t even associate their grandfather’s name with them, and they have gone to start “Bharat Jodo Yatra”

A Facebook user posted the viral picture with the caption: अरे वाह यह क्या कह गए हैं भाई साहब (English translation: Wow! what have you said brother?)

You can check the image here.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral picture, and found it to be false.

The background and the ambience suggest the image is from the ongoing ICC T20I Cricket World Cup, so we started our investigation by running a Reverse Image Search of the viral picture. We found a news article titled: ഇന്ത്യ പാകിസ്താനെ തകർത്ത മെൽബൺ ഗ്രൗണ്ടിലും ‘ഭാരത് ജോഡോ യാത്ര’ക്ക് പിന്തുണ (English translation: Support for ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ also at Melbourne ground where India defeated Pakistan), published on October 23, 2022, on the website of Madhyamam  a Malayalam language newspaper.

The surrounding elements in the image in the news article match with the viral picture, the only difference being the poster. The former shows the poster to be promoting the Bharat Jodo Yatra instead of criticising it.

We also came across a tweet from October 23, 2022, published on the official handle of the Indian National Congress. The picture retweeted by the INC matches the one in Madhyamam.

A Facebook post, dated October 23, 2022, published on the official and verified handle of M K Raghavan a Member of Parliament from Kozhikode in Kerala. The image of the post differs from the viral image, thereby proving that the viral image has been edited in order to criticise Bharat Jodo Yatra.

Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral image claiming fans demeaning Bharat Jodo Yatra during a cricket match is false.
