Fact Check: Did Kohli Announce His Retirement After India Lost in T20 World Cup? Here’s the Truth

Date:

After India lost to England by 10 wickets in the T20 World Cup 2022’s semi-finals, a video started making the rounds on social media claiming that Indian cricketer Virat Kohli has announced retirement.

The video of a press conference was shared with a caption: विराट कोहली ने सेमीफाइनल में हार के बाद क्रिकेट से संन्यास की घोषणा की (English translation: Virat Kohli announces retirement from cricket after losing in the semi-final.)

Here’s the link to the post.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the post, and found it to be false.

We watched the video carefully, but could not find Kohli making any such announcement.

We found the longer version of the press conference streamed live on the YouTube channel of newswire ANI, dated September 5, 2022, and titled: Asia Cup 2022: Virat Kohli addresses a press conference after losing to Pakistan |India Pakistan match.

The viral clip can be seen at the 00:58 time code of the original video.

We found multiple media reports speculating if Kohli would take retirement from the T20 format, however, none of them mentioned that he has announced his retirement.

According to a report, when asked about senior players like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, R Ashwin and Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s future in T20 cricket, coach Rahul Dravid said, “It’s too early to talk about it, just after a semi-final game… These guys have been terrific performers for us. We’ve got a couple of years to reflect on it. These are some really quality players here. Not the right time to talk about or think about this stuff now. We’ll have enough time, enough matches as we go on ahead and try to prepare for the next World Cup.”

Thus, it is clear that the viral claim is false as no such announcement had been made at the time of writing this article. The article will be updated if there is further development in the story.
