Fact Check: 2013 Image from Winnipeg Pride Parade Falsely Linked to Mass Firing of Twitter Employees

Date:

After taking over Twitter, Elon Musk has gone on a firing spree that started with the top executives of the company. Musk has fired almost 50% of the workforce at the microblogging platform.

Against this backdrop, a viral image showing a group of people parading with a banner in their hands that states ‘Fuck off Elon Musk Sincerely, Twiter employees’ is doing the rounds on social media. Users have shared the image claiming that people are the fired Twitter employees.

A Facebook user posted the viral picture with a caption: Here’s the people that have been censoring conservative speech on Twitter.

You can check the image here.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral picture, and found it to be false.

Looking closely at the viral image, we noticed that the spelling of Twitter on the banner is incorrect. Any employee working at Twitter would know the correct spelling. Conducting a Reverse Image Search of the viral picture, we found an image posted on Flickr the American photo- and video-hosting website, dated June 2, 2013

The description of the image on Flickr informs that the photo is from the Pride March organised in Winnipeg, Canada, in 2013. It further tells that there were furries as well in the pride march.

The content on the banner in the Flickr image is completely different from the viral image and gives the impression that the banner has been edited to mislead people.

We also came across a nine-year-old picture of a banner similar to the one in the pride parade. The picture is uploaded on Furaffinity an online art gallery dedicated to anthropomorphic and furry artwork, and the description of the image states: “So, this is the banner that we created for our official Winnipeg Pride Parade walking group! We had a lot of fun, and hopefully next year we will have even more fun as more and more Prairie furs get their suits and partials….”

The banner on Furaffinity matches exactly with the one on Flickr, thereby proving that the banner in the viral image has been edited.

We could not find any single credible new source informing about any parade by the Twitter employees who were fired. Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral image  claiming that Twitter employees parading on the streets against Elon Musk is false.
