Fact Check: Viral Post from China Falsely Linked to Deepotsava Celebrations Near Mahankaleshwara Temple in Kerala

Date:

A viral video showing series of boats moving along the river in the shape of a dragon is doing the rounds on social media. Many users have shared the video claiming it to be from Deepotsava held near Mahankaleshwara Temple in Miralam Mandi, Kerala, with 240 boats.

A Facebook user posted the viral video with a caption: కేరళలో 240 పడవలతో నదిలో నాగుపాము ఆకారంలో దీపోత్సవం. గ్రూపులో ప్రతి సభ్యుడు చూసి ఆనందించడానికి ప్రయత్నించండి.. (English translation: Deepotsava in the shape of a cobra in the river with 240 boats in Kerala. Try to enjoy every member of the group..)

You can check the video here.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral video, and found it to be false.

Running a Reverse Image Search of the video keyframes, we found a YouTube Shorts video titled: Golden Dragon in China. Consisting of 88 bamboo rafts cruising on the Yulong River, published on an unverified channel on September 17, 2022.

The description of the video informs that the video is from China’s Yulong river, about a golden dragon made up of 88 bamboo rafts.

Conducting a Google Keyword Search about the event, we traced a Facebook post, dated May 25, 2022, on the verified Facebook page of Xi’s Moments a state-controlled media network of China.

According to the post, the video is from China when numerous rafts formed a 700-metre-long golden dragon moving on the Yulong river in Yangshuo county. The keyframes from the Facebook post match the viral video.

A YouTube video, titled: Check out the 700-meter-long (.4 mile) dragon boat, dated May 31, 2022, on the official channel of CGTN America the American arm of the English language China Global Television Network informs that ‘the boat is being used to bring interest and more tourism to the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.’

We could not find any credible source informing about the event that happened in Kerala recently. Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral video’s claim about Deepotsava celebrations near Mahankaleshwara Temple in Miralam Mandi is misleading.
