Fact Check: 2020 Video from Delhi Elections Falsely Linked to the Upcoming Gujarat Polls

Date:

The Gujarat assembly elections are right around the corner. All the contesting parties and participants are fully dedicated to their rallies and promotions. The Aam Aadmi Party, with Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal at its helm, is emerging to be one of the tough parties to beat in this term’s elections.

Against this backdrop, a viral 10-second clip showing Arvind Kejriwal along with his supporters in the frame is doing the rounds on social media. One of the supporters can be seen putting on a mask, with Modi’s face on it, while walking with Kejriwal. Social media users have shared the video, claiming it to be from Kejriwal’s roadshow in Gujarat.

A Facebook user posted the viral video with a caption: Meanwhile, people of Gujarat in Kejriwal’s roadshow be like.

FACT CHECK

When NewsMobile fact-checked the viral video, it was found to be misleading.

Looking at the video, we found the name Akash Sagar appearing as a suggestion at the bottom. Scanning the profile of Akash, we came across a video published on April 8, 2020. The post contains a series of videos, and the keyframes from 00:04 to 00:08 match exactly with the viral video.

Scanning Akash’s Instagram profile, we found the exact video posted on January 26, 2020. Akash is a content creator and uploads videos on his social media handles.

Conducting a Google Keyword Search, we found a news article on News18, dated January 28, 2020, with a title: TikTok Star Puts on Modi Mask While Walking Next to Arvind Kejriwal in Rally and We’re Very Confused. The article informs that the incident happened in January 2020 during one of the rallies of AAP for Delhi elections, and Akash originally posted the video on TikTok.

A similar news article, titled: केजरीवाल का टिकटॉक वीडियो वायरल, रैली में साथ चलते शख्स ने पहन लिया मोदी का मुखौटा, published in Times Now Hindi, dated January 28, 2020, informs about the same, thereby confirming that the incident, indeed, happened in 2020 during the Delhi elections, and has nothing to do with the upcoming Gujarat elections.

Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral video claiming a man wore Modi’s mask in one of Kejriwal’s road shows in Gujarat is misleading.
