Fact Check: Image of PM Modi with Gujarat’s Agriculture Minister Shared with Misleading Claims

Date:

At least 140 people lost their lives in a horrific accident caused by the collapse of a cable bridge over the Machhu river in Gujarat’s Morbi city on October 30, 2022. The renovation of this bridge was going on for almost seven months and it was opened to the general public on October 26. Morbi administration alleges that the company ‘Oreva’, which got its renovation done, started it without getting the quality checked of the bridge. It is also being told in some reports that this company had given the contract to repair the bridge to some other company.

Against this backdrop, an image showing PM Modi standing next to a man has gone viral on social media, claiming that it shows the owner of the company which has done the renovation of the cable bridge of Morbi.

The image is shared on Facebook with a caption: “आप जो तस्वीर मे देख रहे ये है मोदी के साथ ओधव पटेल है इसीको मोरबी ब्रिज रिपेयर का करोड़ों का टेंडर दिया गया था. आज जो मोरबी गुजरात मे 91 लोगों की मृत्यु हुई है, आकडा बढ रहा.. उसमे 50 छोटे बच्चे है. उद्योगपति ओधव पटेल नाम का व्यक्ति तीन कंपनियों को चलाता है. ओरेवा, अजंता, ओरपट गृप. तीनों कंपनियों पर मोदीजी का हाथ है इसमे कोई संदेह नही” (English translation: The picture you see is Odhav Patel with Modi, who was given tender worth crores of rupees for Morbi Bridge Repair. Today, 91 people have died in Morbi Gujarat, the figure is increasing. There are 50 small children in it. A person named industrialist Odhav Patel runs three companies. Orewa, Ajanta, Orpat Group. There is no doubt about Modiji’s hand on all three companies.)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be MISLEADING.

Doing a simple Reverse Image Search, we found a Facebook page of Raghavji Patel, Agriculture Minister of Gujarat, that carried the same viral on October 14, 2021. The caption reads: “Respected Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji means hope of the people of the nation, the authority that paved the way for the whole country in disasters, today he felt blessed when Shree took time for greeting visit, guided and wished for a bright tenure.”

This image was also carried by many news websites in 2021 reporting the same.

Odhavji Raghavji Patel started Ajanta Company in 1971 in Morbi, Gujarat. In the beginning, this company only made wall clocks. Later it also started making CFL bulbs, e-bikes and other things. Odhavji Raghavji Patel was also the founder of Orpat and Oreva companies. He is called the ‘Father of Wall Clocks’. He passed away in the year 2012.

Thus, it is evident from the above information that the image of PM Modi with Gujarat’s agriculture minister is being shared with misleading claims.
