Fact Check: Did Rishi Sunak Praise Former Indian PM Manmohan Singh? Here’s the Truth

On October 25, 2022, Rishi Sunak became Britain’s first Prime Minister of colour. In the above context, many social media have shared a graphic by the Indian daily Dainik Jagran mentioning that Sunak has praised former Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

The graphic attributed a statement to Sunak, which reads:“भारत को सही दिशा और दशा देने कमजोर गिरती अर्थव्यवस्था को सुधारने के लिए मनमोहन सिंह जैसे प्रधानमंत्री की आवश्यकता है -ऋषि सुनक” (English translation: “Prime Minister like Manmohan Singh is needed to give right direction and condition to India, to improve the falling economy Rishi Sunak”.)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile did the fact-check, and found it to be fake.

We did not find any news of Rishi Sunak praising Manmohan Singh. We did not find any such tweet by Rishi Sunak.

The original tweet by Dainik Bhaskar, dated October 26, 2022, is similar to the viral screenshot.

The original tweet had image of Rishi Sunak and Manmohan Singh along with the text: “चिदंबरम-थरूर की सलाह, भारत में भी हो अल्पसंख्यक PM: भाजपा बोली- मनमोहन सिंह को भूल गए.” (English translation: Chidambaram and Tharoor suggested that India should have PM from a minority community: BJP said forgot Manmohan Singh.”)

The tweet also had a link to the report saying that after Sunak became the prime minister, Congress suggested that India, too, should have the PM from a minority community.

Based on the above fact check, we can ascertain that the viral post is edited.
