New Delhi: The ‘Festival of Lights’ has taken over the country with people decorating their houses with diyas and lights.
With the fun of festivities across the country, state governments have imposed a ban on the purchase, sale, and use of firecrackers, in a bid to curb the air pollution levels across the country.
Delhi
To curb air pollution, the state government has banned the sale, purchase, storage, and production of firecrackers during Diwali.
“The purchase and bursting of firecrackers in Delhi will be punishable with a fine of ₹200 and six months in jail under the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Manufacturing, storing, firecrackers in Delhi punishable with fine up to ₹5,000 and three years in jail,” Environment Minister Gopal Rai said.
Chennai
Following the judgment of the Supreme Court of India, the city has allowed the bursting of only green crackers for two hours on Diwali. The Chennai Police has further released a statement laying down various restrictions in connection with celebration during Diwali.
Mumbai
Mumbai Police has banned the sale of firecrackers across the city without proper government-approved licences. Strict action has been ordered against people found selling firecrackers without a valid and authentic licence.
Chandigarh
The government has allowed a window of two hours between 8:00 pm and 10:00 pm to burst green crackers on the day of Diwali.
Kolkata
The state government has banned the sale of all firecrackers. Green crackers bearing QR codes proving their authenticity can be sold. The government has further deployed police personnel to keep a check on the firecrackers sold at the local markets.
Haryana
The state government has imposed a complete ban on the purchase and sale of firecrackers during Diwali, in a bid to curb the levels of pollution across the state. However, the sale and bursting of green crackers are allowed.
