Fact Check: Did RSS Defy Court Order & Organise Rally In Chennai? Here’s The Truth

Date:

The Tamil Nadu government denied permission to RSS to conduct a route march in the state on October 2, 2022, citing security reasons. RSS filed a petition in Madras High Court to get the decision overturned. The High Court directed them to hold their rally on November 6, 2022, instead of October 2, failing which it would lead to their facing a contempt petition from the court.

In this backdrop, a video claiming that RSS conducted their route march in Chennai despite the order is doing rounds on social media.

A Facebook user posted the viral video with the caption:

(English Translation: The route march banned by Stalin in Chennai is going… Could be a dual war… To the one who came to me… Otherwise, the soil will fall outside… Poor Stalin seems to have not heard this…)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral video and found the claims to be misleading.

If RSS had gone against the Madras High Court order, it would have made headlines immediately but we could not find any news report to corroborate that had happened.

A Google keyword search around the viral video took us to a Times Now report dated October 2, 2022, titled: RSS workers carry out a march in Puducherry after Tamil Nadu refuses permission.

According to the article, RSS conducted their rally in Puducherry on October 2, 2022, after they were denied permission by the Madras High Court. The members of the organisation took part in the rally wearing their official Khaki uniform and conducted the route march with a band leading them through the streets.

Since Puducherry is a Union Territory, it is governed by the Centre and not by Tamil Nadu government.

To know more about the viral video we conducted a Reverse Image Search of the video keyframes. Our search landed us on a live video streaming on October 2, 2022, on the official Facebook handle of BJP Tamil Nadu

The live video matches exactly with the viral video and the caption on the live video translates to: Puducherry Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh Triennial Parade. This also confirms that the rally took place in Puducherry and not Chennai.

Finally, we came across a photo gallery published on October 2, 2022, on the website on News 18 Tamil. The article was titled: புதுச்சேரியில் ஆர்.எஸ்.எஸ். பேரணி – அமைச்சர்கள் உட்பட 500க்கும் மேற்பட்டோர் பங்கேற்பு (English: RSS in Puducherry. Rally – More than 500 people including ministers participated) shows us pictures from the route march held in Puducherry, corroborating the facts presented above.

Therefore, based on our investigation we can conclusively say that the viral video, claiming that RSS organised a rally in Chennai on October 2, 2022, going against the government and the court’s order, is misleading.
