Fact Check: 2020 Video of Women Fighting in Etah on Karva Chauth Viral with Misleading Claims

Date:

The viral video showing a group of women fighting in the middle of a market is doing the rounds on social media, claiming that it was shot in Prayagraj on the day of Karva Chauth. Many social media users have shared the video with a communal angle that a Muslim girl provoked a Hindu woman and got thrashed for her remarks.

A Facebook user posted the viral video with a caption: प्रयागराज में आज एक हिंदू औरत करवा चौथ की खरीदारी कर रही थी की एक मुस्लिम लड़की ने अभद्र टिप्पणी कर दी बस फिर क्या था हिंदू शेरनियों ने उसके साथ वो सलूक किया कि वह ताउम्र नहीं भूल पाएगी. ज्यादा से ज्यादा शेयर करें ताकि अपने त्योहारों के सम्मान के लिए लड़ने वालो को हिम्मत मिले (English translation: Today, in Prayagraj a Hindu woman was shopping for Karva Chauth that a Muslim girl made indecent remarks, just what was the Hindu lioness treated with her that she will not forget in her life. Share as much as possible so that those who fight for the honour of their festivals get courage.)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral video, and found it to be misleading.

Running a Reverse Image Search of the video keyframes, we found a news article titled: आंटी थोड़ा साइड हो जाइए, सुनते ही नाराज महिला ने लड़की को जमकर पीटा; एटा में बाजार में बना तमाशा, published on November 3, 2020, in Jagran an Indian Hindi media network.

According to the article, the incident happened in the Babuganj market area of Etah, Uttar Pradesh, when a girl addressed one of the women shoppers as ‘Aunty’. This infuriated the woman and the fight started. The incident happened in November 2020. We found similar news reports on various other media websites like India.com, Siasat News, and Guwahati Times to name a few.

The keyframes of another video, published on the online video hosting website Dailymotion, with a title: Karwachauth shopping: Women beats up girl for calling her an ‘aunty’, watch the video|Oneindia News, match exactly with the viral video. The description of the video corroborates the news story above, and further informs that the fight got separated only after a lady cop intervened.

Also, a tweet was published  on the official handle of Hindustan Live an Indian Hindi daily, dated November 3, 2020. The 38-second video in the tweet matches exactly with the viral video, and informs that the incident happened in Etah, UP.

We could not find any communal link in all the news articles and videos, and neither could we find any link to Prayagraj. The incident occurred in Etah two years back and is now viral with false claims.

Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral video claiming Hindu and Muslim women fighting in Prayagraj on the day of Karva Chauth is misleading.
