On December 5, 2019, while answering NCP MP Supriya Sule’s answer on the production and price of onions, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said: “Main itna lehsun, pyaaz nahi khati hoon ji. Main aise pariwar se aati hoon jaha onion, pyaaz se matlab nahi rakhte.” (English translation: “I don’t eat a lot of onion and garlic. I belong to a family where we do not care about onion.”)
In the above context, many social media users are sharing an image which shows Nirmala Sitharaman buying onion from a vegetable market.
The image is shared with a caption that reads: “प्याज खाने से परहेज करने वाली केंद्रीय वित्त मंत्री निर्मला सीतारमण का प्याज खरीदते हुए फोटो हुआ सोशल मीडिया पर वायरल” (English translation: “Photo of Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman buying onions, who refrained from eating onions, went viral on social media.”)

FACT CHECK
NewsMobile did the fact-check, and found it to be fake.
Doing a Google Reverse Image Search, we found the same image published by a website, Fresh Headline, dated October 8, 2022. One of the images was similar to the viral image. However, in the original image, Sitharaman was not purchasing onion but some other vegetable.
The official Twitter handle of Nirmala Sitharaman also shared a video of her buying vegetables, but not onion. The video is shared with a caption: “During her day-long visit to Chennai, Smt@nsitharaman made a halt at Mylapore market where she interacted with the vendors and local residents, and also purchased vegetables.”
Hence, we can ascertain that the picture in question is morphed and the viral claim is fake.
