The death of Mahsa Amini has sparked waves of angry women activists’ protests that have rocked Iran over the past few weeks. The 22-year-old Kurdish woman was visiting Tehran when the morality police detained her. It is alleged that she passed away on September 16 while she was in police custody.

Police stated that the woman was detained because her headscarf was improperly worn, but a wave of protests broke out after she died while in their custody. Morality police were criticized for mistreating the young woman, but they later claimed that she died of a heart attack after being taken to the hospital in a rush.

Following this, hundreds of women in Iran hit the streets and burnt their hijab as mark of protest. Many others publicly cut their hairs as a mark of protest.
