Mumbai: The Election Commission of India froze the Shiv Sena’s bow and arrow symbol on Saturday amid a dispute between the factions led by Uddhav Thackeray and Eknath Shinde.
The EC in its order has asked the two factions to choose from among the symbols that are available and submit three options for their interim markers by 1 pm on Monday.
With the symbol frozen, Uddhav Thackeray and his group will have to find a different name and symbol for the upcoming bypolls in Mumbai’s Andheri (East).
“The names of their groups by which they may be recognized by Commission and to this end, give three options in order of preference, anyone of which may be approved by the Commission and; the symbols which may be allotted to the candidates set up, if any, by the respective groups. They may indicate the names of three free symbols, in the order of their preference, anyone of which may be allotted to their candidates by the Commission,” the order said.
The order was passed as the petition filed by Shinde for official recognition of his faction as the official Shiv Sena under the Election Symbols (Reservation and Allotment) Order, 1968 was being considered.
A Supreme Court Constitution bench dismissed the Thackeray group’s request for a stay of the proceedings before the poll panel Shinde had convened on September 27.
