Fact Check: The Viral Post Showing Flag Made of Hair as a Protest Against Wearing Hijab in Iran Is Fake

Date:

Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Kurdish woman, who was imprisoned by morality police on September 13 in Tehran for allegedly breaking the law that mandates women to cover their hair with a hijab, or headscarf, passed away a week later in the hospital. Her detention and death resulted in a massive protest all over Iran.

In the above context, an image of a flag made of hair has gone viral on social media. The image is shared with a caption that reads: “A flag of protest in Iran, by revolting ladies against Hijab… Air of freedom.

Beutiful protest, something like sending pink chaddis to Hindutva hooligans.”

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile did the fact check, and found it to be fake.

On doing a Google Reverse Image, we found the same image published in a PDF with a caption: “Ombre indigène 30 (Part. 2, Martinique), video projection, 16/9, 34’17”, on a loop, 2014.”

The caption further reads: “A flag made of hair was stuck in the ground and filmed on top of rocks on the Diamant coast, in Martinique. There, precisely, on the night of 8 April 1830, a clandestine slave boat transporting hundred African captives washed up on the rocks before being entirely destroyed. Edouard Glissant was buried not far, in the small town of Diamant. Native from this island, this author is at the origin of the “tout-monde” (one-world) and “creolisation” concepts, the later being like an “interbreeding producing unpredictability.”

Another website, eFlux, also shared the image in an article published in 2016. According to the article, the flag was made by Belgian artist Edith Dekyndt in 2016. The report further said, “The scenario she has constructed for the context of the post-industrial space at WIELS — a former brewery — consists of works based on copper, yeast, earth, water from the local river Senne, and the bacteria used to brew the Brussels speciality beer, gueuze. In this way, she links the specificity of the site with the characteristics and general qualities of natural elements, and forges connections between the particular and the universal, the concrete and the abstract. .”

Hence, we can ascertain that the viral post is fake.
