New Delhi: The head priest of the Ram temple in Ayodhya demanded an immediate ban on the movie, Adipurush, amid the ongoing row over the teaser of the Bollywood movie over the alleged wrong depiction of Lord Ram, Hanuman and Ravana.
The priest stated that the way Lord Ram, Hanuman, and Ravana are portrayed, violates their dignity because it does not follow the real story. Making a film is not a crime but they should not be made to create deliberate controversies to hog the limelight, head priest Satyendra Das reportedly said.
The Adipurush teaser was previously criticised for hurting Hindu sentiments by Uttar Pradesh deputy chief ministers Kesav Prasad Maurya and Brajesh Pathak.
“Whatever saints have said needs attention. Movies have often hurt the sentiments of Hindus. Whenever our culture was attacked it was these saints and akharas that saved our culture. We are proud of our culture,” Pathak reportedly said in a statement.
The Vishva Hindu Parishad also objected to the teaser for similar reasons.
While Madhya Pradesh’s home minister Narottam Mishra also threatened legal action if the offensive scenes were not removed.
“Hanuman ji is shown wearing leather, whereas the description (in the scriptures) of the deity’s costume is different… These are scenes that hurt religious sentiments. I am writing a letter to Om Raut to remove all such scenes from the film. If not removed, we will consider legal action,” Mishra reportedly said.
BJP spokesperson Malavika Avinash said the makers of the film did not do any research before developing Ravana’s character, she said “This is our history they are representing; they cannot do it in the guise of creative liberty.”
Adipurush is the latest big-budget Indian film to draw on Hindu mythology and culture, to be released in 2023, director Om Raut calls it a passion project.
The film starts Saif Ali Khan as Ravana, south star Prabhas as Lord Ram and Kriti Sanon as Sita.
The film’s 1.46 min teaser released on October 2 in a grand ceremony in Ayodhya, has been facing backlash from many on social media for its poor VFX or poor depiction of the epic Ramayana story.

Om Raut who also directed Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior in past opened up on the criticism In an interview with Indian Express, he said. “I was disheartened for sure, not surprised because the film is made for a larger medium, the big screen. You can cut it down to some extent but can’t bring it down to a mobile phone.”
“That’s an environment I can’t control. Given a choice, I’d never put it on YouTube but that’s the need of the hour. We need to put it there so that it reaches a wide audience.”
