Date:

A video of an earthquake is widely shared on social media claiming that a massive 7.6-magnitude earthquake rocked Papua New Guinea in the southwest Pacific Ocean on September 11. The viral video shows people panicking as the tremor caused cracking roads and damaging buildings.

The video is shared on Facebook with a caption: “ WOW!!  Incredible video! The earth cracked during the 7.6M (+4 = ~11.6M) earthquake in Papua New Guinea.”

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be MISLEADING.

Extracting keyframes from the viral video and performing a Reverse Image Search with relevant keywords, we found several YouTube videos carrying the same viral video of 2018, with a caption: “Earthquake Liquefaction Palu Indonesia terrible.”

Similar stills from the viral video had been uploaded in a blog, published on October 15, 2018. The article headline reads: “Sigi Biromaru: terrifying footage of lateral spreading during the Sulawesi earthquake.”

A similar video had been uploaded by Getty Images, dated October 10, 2018, with the description: “This footage provided by Dewan Dakwah Islamiyah Indonesia on October 10, 2018, shows the moment of the earthquake in Palu city, Central Sulawesi province of Indonesia. On September 28, a 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck Sulawesi Island, triggeringtsunami in Donggala and Palu cities that towered up to 10 feet (3 metres) high.”

According to news reports, on September 28, 2018, a massive 7.5 magnitude earthquake and ensuing tsunami struck Palu. With an estimated population of 379,800 in 2017, the city serves as the provincial seat of Central Sulawesi and is situated at the mouth of a small harbour on the west coast of the island.

Though, we could not ascertain the exact date and time of the location, it is evident from the above information that a 4-year-old video is being falsely shared as the impact of the recent Papua New Guinea earthquake.
