Fact Check: Image of a Child Studying Under Street Light Is from Bijnor in India, Not Egypt

Date:

A picture of a child studying under a street light on a rooftop is doing the rounds on social media. Many users are sharing the picture claiming it to be from Egypt and the dire situation to be a result of the non-payment of electricity bills by the people.

A Facebook user posted the viral video with a caption:

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral video, and found it to be misleading.

Running a Reverse Image Search of the viral image, we traced a tweet — dated September 1, 2022 — by Awanish Sharan, an IAS officer from the Chhattisgarh cadre.

Conducting a Google Keyword Search to know more about the details of the image and its precise location, we found a YouTube video, dated September 2, 2022, with a title: Bijnor News || सहानपुर का बच्चा जो स्ट्रीट लाईट में पढ़ाई करता है।, published on a channel Bijnor Speed News

According to the news report, the viral image is from Sahanpur, Bijnor in Uttar Pradesh. The reporter is present on the exact rooftop shown in the image, and he interviews the boy as well where we find out that the name of the child in the image is Ishan and he is currently studying in 4th standard in a government school. He was doing his homework for Hindi when the photograph was taken.

Another news article, published in Jagran a Hindi news website dated September 4, 2022, with a title:इशान का हौसला देखकर भी नहीं पसीजा दिल, छात्र के पिता को बिजलीघर कार्यालय से खाली हाथ लौटाया, clarifies that the child in the viral image is Ishan a resident of Sahanpur, Bijnor. He was studying under the street light due to the non-availability of electricity connection at his home. Even after the picture went viral, the electricity department did not help his father to secure a connection.

Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral image claiming a child studying under a street light in Egypt is misleading.
