Fact Check: Did Gaurav Bhatia of BJP Speak Against His Party Recently? Here’s the Truth

Date:

A video of BJP’s national spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia is widely shared on social media. In the video, Bhatia can be heard saying that BJP conspires on how to divide people in the country and get communal riots done. Sharing this video, social media users claim that it is a recent incident.

The video is shared on Facebook with a caption: “नाराज #भाजपा_प्रवक्ता गौरव भाटिया ने भाजपा छोड़ी और जो उन्होंने कहा ध्यान से सुनो संघ, भाजपा, विश्व हिन्दू परिषद देश में दंगे कराते हैं” (English translation: Angry BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia left BJP, saying Sangh, BJP, and Vishwa Hindu Parishad organise riots in the country.)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be MISLEADING.

Extracting keyframes from the viral video and performing a Reverse Image Search, we traced the official YouTube channel of ABP News, carrying the same viral video, dated August 18, 2014. The video description reads: “Mohan Bhagwat’s statement disappointing. He should read the Constitution,” says SP leader Gaurav Bhatia.

In fact, Gaurav Bhatia had joined BJP in April 2017. Prior to this, he was the spokesperson of Samajwadi Party. And Bhatia’s comment was a reaction to the statement made by RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat regarding Hindu Rashtra.

We performed a keyword search, but could not find any credible media report corroborating the viral claim.

Thus, it is evident that an eight-year-old video of Gaurav Bhatia is being falsely shared as his recent attacks against BJP.
