Fact Check: Does the Viral Image Show T. Raja Beaten By Police Before His Arrest? Here’s the Truth

On August 25, 2022, T. Raja Singh, BJP MLA from Telangana, prominent for his communal remarks, was arrested by police over his remarks against Prophet Mohammad.

In the above context, an image is widely shared on social media with a caption claiming that it is of T. Raja Singh. It further said that he was beaten by police before his arrest.

The image is shared with a caption that reads: “टी. राजा सिंह को हैदराबाद पुलिस नें कूटा,
ओवैसी साहब को सियासत का सुलतान इसीलिए कहते हैं!” (English translation: “T. Raja Singh was beaten up by the Hyderabad Police, That’s why Owaisi sahib is called the sultan of politics!.”)

Doing a Google Reverse Image Search, we found the same image uploaded by India Today, dated June 20, 2019. The article associated with the image reads: “The Controversial BJP MLA T. Raja Singh received injuries in the head in a police attack when he, along with supporters, wanted to replace a statue of freedom fighter Rani Avanti Bai Lodhi under his Goshamahal constituency of Hyderabad.”

The same image had been uploaded by The Hindu, dated June 20, 2019, with a title: “Telangana police says BJP MLA Raja Singh hit himself with boulder, releases the video.”

Fact:

The same image had also been uploaded by The Indian Express, dated June 20, 2019, with a caption: “BJP MLA Raja Singh claimed the police used force against him and his supporters, and during the ensuing scuffle he suffered a head injury which required stitches.”

Thus, the viral claim is misleading.
