Fact Check: Video Of Rahul Gandhi Saying ‘Atta ₹40 Per Litre’ Shared With Misleading Context

Date:

A video of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is being shared on social media where he can be heard saying that the price of atta (wheat flour) rose from ₹22 per litre in 2014 to ₹40 per litre now.

The 10 sec video clip is being shared with the caption: “महंगाई पर भाषण देने वाले शहजादे को ये नही पता आटा लीटर में मिलता है या किलो में!”

(English Translation: The prince, who gave a speech on inflation, does not know whether the flour is available in litres or in kilos!)

Here’s the link to the above post.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the post and found the post to be misleading.

We ran a search and found the original video of the speech on the official YouTube channel of the Indian National Congress that was streamed live on September 4, 2022, with the title, “महंगाई पर हल्ला बोल रैली” (Halla Bol Rally on Inflation)

We watched the video carefully and found the same clip with full context at the 1:52:06 time code of the above video. In the original video, Gandhi says, “I have the numbers. In 2014, LPG cylinders used to cost Rs 410, today it is Rs 1050. Petrol was Rs 70 per litre, today it is around Rs 100 per litre. Diesel was Rs 55 per litre, today it is Rs 90 per litre. Mustard oil was Rs 90 per litre, today it is Rs 200 per litre. Milk was Rs 35 per litre, today it is Rs 60 per litre. Atta (flour) was Rs 22 per litre, today it is Rs 40 per litre.”

However, immediately he realised his mistake and corrected it to Kg.

Thus, it is clear that the viral video is misleading as the part where he has corrected himself has been edited out and the edited video is being shared with a misleading claim.
