Fact Check: 2017 Speech of Ravish Kumar Viral with Misleading Claims

The Adani Group, led by India’s richest man Gautam Adani, has indirectly acquired 29% shares in NDTV, and plans to acquire another 26% shares through an open public offer. This would make Adani the majority stakeholder in the company and squeeze out the founders and promoters, Radhika Roy and Prannoy Roy, from NDTV Ltd.

Ravish Kumar, a senior journalist at NDTV, has always been at the centre of online scrutiny for his relations with the right-wing government and their supporter groups/organisations. Against this backdrop, a viral video claiming that Ravish has finally reacted to the Adani takeover is doing the rounds on social media.

A Facebook user posted the viral video with a caption: NDTV बिक जाने के बाद सुनिए क्या बोले Ravish Kumar । छलका दर्द, फूटा गुस्सा । Ravish Kumar Prime Time.

You can find the viral video here.

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral video, and found it to be misleading.

Running a Reverse Image Search of the keyframes, we traced a Facebook post Unofficial Truth Gurumantra dated October 19, 2017. The caption of the post indicates that the video is from a 2017 event Manthan Samvaad, and Ravish Kumar spoke about ‘Gandhi & Dimensions of Truth’ at the event.

Conducting a Google Keyword Search about the event and Kumar’s involvement with it, we found a video posted on the official YouTube channel of Manthan India a forum for public discourse that gives a platform to thought leaders worldwide to share their ideas and for high-quality debates.

The keyframes from the video titled: Ravish Kumar on ‘Gandhi & Dimensions of Truth’ at Manthan Samvaad 2017, published on October 8, 2017, match exactly with the ones from the viral video.

We also came across a Facebook post by Ravish Kumar on his official account, dated August 29, 2022. Kumar has posted the link to the YouTube video by Manthan India, clarifying that the video is from 2017.

It is clear from the 2017 YouTube video that Kumar gave a speech on ‘Gandhi & Dimensions of Truth’ at Manthan Samvaad 2017 the annual talk festival organised by Manthan India. The original video is one hour and 16 minutes long, thereby proving that the viral video is an edited cut-out version of the former.

Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral video claiming that Ravish Kumar reacted to the Adani takeover is misleading.
