A newspaper clipping goes viral on social media with the claim that while on one hand, the BJP is garnering accolades for making a tribal woman President Draupadi Murmu, on the other hand, in the BJP-ruled Madhya Pradesh, the police forcefully made some tribals drink urine after they asked for water.
The image is shared on Facebook with a caption: “शर्मनाक। और बीजेपी कह रही है कि हमने राष्ट्रपति आदिवासी बना दिया।” (English translation: Shameful! BJP says that we have made the President tribal.)

FACT CHECK
NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be MISLEADING.
However, closely looking at the image, we found the date — August 14, 2019 — written at the top of the article.
The Indian Express, in a article dated August 13, 2019, had also reported the same incident.
According to the report, four policemen, including the in-charge of Nanpur police station in Alirajpur, Madhya Pradesh, have been suspended for beating five tribal youths in custody. The policemen were accused of forcing the tribals in custody to drink urine when they asked for water. Injury marks were found on the bodies of youths. Several other news articles have also reported the same incident in 2019.
Though Congress came to power in the 2018 Assembly election in Madhya Pradesh, in 2020 — due to political crisis — several MLAs resigned and paved the way for the Shivraj Singh Chouhan-led BJP government to take power in the state. Thus, it is evident that the viral incident happened when the Congress government was in power.
Clearly, an old incident of atrocities by Madhya Pradesh police is being falsely linked to the current BJP government in the state.
