Fact Check: Has Government Stopped Deploying CISF at Adani-controlled Airports? Here’s The Truth

Date:

A widely circulated social media post claims that the government has stopped deploying  the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) at airports as the Adani Group will hire private security guards at all airports it manages, because airports are now permitted to use such personnel.

The title of the post reads: “हवाई अड्डों को निजी सुरक्षा गार्ड तैनात करने की अनुमति” (English translation: “Airports are allowed to deploy private security guards for its security.”)

The post is shared with a caption: “जल्द ही सीआईएसएफ में भी भर्ती पूरी तरह से बंद कर दी जाएगी….. उनकी जगह अडानी की कंपनी अडानी एयरपोर्ट होल्डिंग्स लिमिटेड (AAHL) अपने पर्सनल सिक्योरिटी गार्ड भर्ती करेगी क्योंकि देश के अधिकतर एयरपोर्ट 50 सालो के लिए अडानी को दे दिए गए हैं. बोलिए नमो नमो” (English translation: “Soon, the recruitment in CISF will also be stopped completely… Adani Airport Holdings Limited (AAHL) will recruit its personal security guards in their place as most of the airports in the country have been given to Adani for 50 years. Huh! namo namo.”)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile did the fact-check, and found it to be misleading.

A similar report was published by Business Standard on August 25, 2022. According to the report, “Around 1,900 private agency guards will take over non-core security roles at over 50 airports in the country.” Meanwhile, airports have started roping in private guards for non-core functions, such as segregation of passengers at departure and arrival gates, access control/document check-in security hold areas, access to visitor galleries, and security of vital installations.

Quoting a spokesperson of Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL), a report in The Times of India says: “The current deployment of private security agencies covers non-core areas of security and the individuals so deployed continue to be under the command and control of the CISF. The airport operator does not exercise any control over them. CISF is also responsible for the training of the private security involved in non-core security tasks and ensures that their training is at par with that imparted to CISF. They have been deployed post an elaborate pre-deployment and on-the-job training period.” According to the TOI, MIAL said: “The CISF continues to be in charge of the core areas of security at the airports involving anti-hijack measures and perimeter protection. Deploying private security for non-core tasks allows CISF to concentrate on the core tasks and ensures better security at our airports.”

In an interview with NDTV, the Chief Airport Officer of Adani Group-acquired Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (LGBI), Guwahati, clarified that private security guards will be appointed for non-core jobs. However, the areas where ‘rigorous training and knowledge of security is required, it will still remain under CISF.

Hence, we can ascertain that the viral claim is misleading.
