Fact Check: 2017 Image of Breaking TV in India Shared as Recent One from Pakistan

As India defeated Pakistan by five wickets in a nail-biting match of Asia Cup 2022 in Dubai, an image of people breaking TV started doing the rounds on social media. As per the text, the image shows people breaking TV after Pakistan lost the match.

The text reads: पाकिस्तान में टीवी फोड़ने की खबरें आ रही हैं भारत से हारने के बाद (English translation: After losing to India, reports of people breaking TVs is coming from Pakistan.)

NewsMobile fact-checked the post, and found it to be old.

Putting the image through a Reverse Image Search, we found the same image in a report by India Today, dated June 19, 2017. According to the report, the image is of people breaking their TVs on roads in Ahmedabad after Pakistan defeated India at the Champions Trophy finals in 2017.

The same image was also shared in a 2017 report by the Deccan herald with a caption: Cricket fans break television sets after India lost the match against Pakistan, in Ahmedabad on Sunday. PTI Photo

Similar sets of images were also shared by Bombay Times on Twitter, dated June 18, 2017, with a caption: TV sets broken on the streets of Ahmedabad after India’s defeat by Pakistan in the #CT2017Final #IndVsPak

Thus, it can be concluded that the image was taken in 2017 in India and is not a recent one from Pakistan.
