Fact Check: 2021 Chennai Traffic Jam Video Goes Viral with Misleading Claims

Date:

The Assam government conducted its direct recruitment exam for grades III and IV posts, under the state health department, on August 21, 2022. A total of 1,258 centres hosted the exam for a smooth and hassle-free recruitment.

Against this backdrop, a viral video showing a massive traffic jam on the roads of Silchar is doing the rounds on social media. Many social media users have shared the video, claiming that the jam is a result of the heavy turnout of students for the exam.

A Facebook user posted the viral video with a caption: “Assam Grade 4 Exam !!!  Silchar traffic jam night view”

You can watch the video here.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral claim, and found it to be misleading.

Running a Reverse Image Search of the video keyframes, we found one news report in The Times of India, dated December 31, 2021. The 46-second video report, titled: Tamil Nadu: Heavy rainfall causes traffic jam at Chennai’s Mount Road, says that it is from Mount Road, Chennai, and the traffic jam is a result of heavy rainfall in the city.

The video keyframes match exactly with the viral video, indicating that the post is almost 8 months old and from Chennai, but not Silchar as claimed in the viral video.

Conducting a Google Keyword Search about Chennai rains on December 30, 2021, we came across a report, titled: IMD Issues Red Alert In 4 Tamil Nadu Districts As Heavy Rains Lash Chennai & Suburbs, published online, ABP Live.

The picture used in the report matches exactly with one of the keyframes from the viral video, thereby confirming the location of the video.

Looking closely at the description of the video, we noticed that the image credits are given to ANI.

So, we conducted a Keyword Search for the same and landed on a December 21, 2021, YouTube video, titled: Watch: Rain causes heavy traffic jam in Chennai, posted on the official channel of Indian news agency ANI

The description of the video reads: Chennai (Tamil Nadu), Dec 31 (ANI): Heavy traffic jam at Mount road in Chennai on December 30. Chennai metro has decided to extend its service timing by an hour till 12 am, to facilitate safe journey home of the citizens. The rainfall inundated roads and subways. Commuters are facing troubles as waterlogging causes traffic snarls.  (JA)”

Here too, the video keyframes match exactly with the viral video, proving that the latter is, indeed, from Chennai and is being circulated online now with misleading context.

Therefore, it is clear that the viral video, showing a massive traffic jam with the claims of it being from Assam’s Silchar is misleading.
